Progress Update:
Another week in the books and a few baby steps closer to a finished game. This week’s art focus was on the United Nations cards. I had made an initial pass on the card art a long time ago, but the Atomic Edge art style has evolved since then. Now it’s just a matter of doing a cleanup pass to make sure the art style matches the rest of the cards.
The first card I chose to work on was the “Advisors” card. No rework of the card description was necessary, and the art itself wasn’t bad. It was simply a matter of retexturing some of the objects and repositioning some of the elements.
I also revisited the Arsenal tokens in Tabletop Simulator. I needed to rebalance the token count by adding more Armies. While I was looking at the list of tokens, I decided to add the Air Force and Navy back in as well, with specific lesser (though unique) roles compared to the Army. This will be a key piece to try out in the next playtest.
Challenges
There weren’t too many challenges with this week’s tasks. The card art came together smoothly and the Arsenal token rebalance is a “wait-and-see” test.
Next Steps
Next week we have another United Nations card on deck – “Deindustrialize”.
Beyond art, I really need to get another playtest under my belt. I will be reaching out to some coworkers who want to try out the game again. That means I’ll need to put some finishing touches on the Tabletopia version. I want to see how the newly balanced Arsenal tokens impact player strategies
- “Deindustrialize” UN Card
- Schedule next playtest
- Finish cleaning up Tabletopia
Reflections
I was on the right track initially with the United Nations cards, though I think the art style needed some time to evolve (which it now has).
I also need to get out of my default “put your head down and work” mindset and put a strong emphasis on getting the game in front of people. It’ll never be polished if it never gets played. Reach out if you would be interested in playtesting Atomic Edge!
